THE BRITISH IN MEXICO
THE BRITISH SOCIETY
The British Society in Mexico founded in 1828 is the oldest and most diverse English speaking networking society. Originally founded as a social and book lending club, which met at the home of Thomas Phillips calling itself “The British Association”.
This association was changed to the “Albion Club” in 1833, this time under the leadership of C.O. Phillips. In 1899, it became the “British Club” which it remained until 1969, when it was forced to close for financial reasons. Its successor was known by the name of the “British and Commonwealth Society” until this too closed in 2003 giving way to its current incarnation “The British Society” of Mexico.
The British Society exists to unite the British Community in Mexico, promote businesses with British interests, safeguard British heritage; like the Panteon Británico in Legaria, promote British culture, sport and traditions through fundraising events, which raise money to give back to our generous Mexican hosts.
Membership of The British Society is open to all nationalities and regularly holds events to celebrate important British Saints days and cultural events like Guy Fawkes night and the reigning monarch’s birthday. The British Society also holds fundraising events and sponsors cricket, rugby and football clubs to promote all things British and raise money to help local charities and good causes.
So, whatever your age, nationality or interests, The British Society aims to offer “something for everyone”.
The British Society is a pro-active and multi-cultural organisation, which is run by its members for its members.
The board of The British Society are all volunteers and are always looking for “new blood” anybody can be on the board, just as long as they have been a member of the Society for at least one year. This can be a great way to get yourself involved in the Mexican way of life and meet like - minded individuals, whilst giving something back to the new community that you are living in.
Whether you want to get involved in organising one of the more regular activities or you have your own idea for a new addition to the events calendar, the board of the Society is always available to give advice and support the British community. You can involve yourself as little or as much as you like and will be a welcome addition to the existing board.
If you’d like to get involved please get in touch through treasurer@britsoc.mx
